A Conference That Changed My Perspective

Recently, I attended theGrounds for Innovation Conference, where I listened to a presentation by educatorJason Slowbe, a former President of the California Mathematics Council.

He shared examples of schools using educator-built applications to improve attendance and school culture.

One high school reduced annual tardies from25,429 to 6,963—a72.6% reduction—through a practical intervention system developed by educators. Other schools also reported substantial improvements in attendance and school culture using similar approaches.

The presentation reinforced something I've believed throughout my career:

The people closest to the problem are often the closest to the solution.

That idea became the foundation for theEducator Innovation Sandbox.
